A few miles out of Estes Park, Colorado, Voelkel’s Glacier Lodge once welcomed guests to a quieter kind of wilderness. Built and run by Grover and Cora Voelkel in the early 20th century, the lodge stood as both homestead and haven - offering warm meals, sturdy cabins, world renowned square dancing, camp coffee and local know-how to those willing to venture above the valley floor.
Grover Voelkel was no stranger to the mountain’s moods. A respected horseman and guide, he helped shape many of the trails still used today. Visitors recall tales of muddy boots, crackling fires, and the sound of hooves echoing through the timber.
Though the lodge has since faded into history, its story is still unfolding.
