The Story

More Than Mountains

Colorado has always been more than dramatic scenery. It's road trips through the mountains, ski weekends with friends, mountain cabins, local breweries, favorite roadside meals, and the small souvenirs that quietly become part of everyday life. Rather than paint a traditional landscape, I wanted to capture the experience of living in Colorado by gathering those memories onto a single tabletop beneath a vintage postcard celebrating the Centennial State.

The original inspiration came from California artist Scott Moore, whose richly layered still lifes showed me how everyday objects could tell a much larger story. His work demonstrated that a painting could become a collection of memories instead of a single moment, and that idea stayed with me. While Colorful Colorado reflects my own experiences and the places I've come to love, Scott's storytelling approach gave me the confidence to look beyond the landscape itself and paint everything that makes Colorado feel like home.

Collecting the Memories

The painting began as a list of places, hobbies, foods, and objects that reminded me of life in Colorado rather than one specific destination.

Each object was carefully positioned to balance the composition while creating visual connections between travel, recreation, food, and the Colorado landscape.

Traditional Oil Technique

Working in oils allowed each surface - from snow and glass to polished wood and metal - to be developed through multiple layers and careful blending.

Finish

A Finished Collection

Once complete, the painting became a visual scrapbook celebrating the experiences that make Colorado feel like home.
