D. Line Studio Notes: “Stars, Stripes and a Paddle”
Airbrushed acrylic and colored pencil on thick gessoed hardboard
Process:
-
Draw – Start with a full graphite rendering on primed hardboard. Establish the main forms, perspective, and lighting with careful pencil work. Keep lines confident but light enough to allow later layering.

-
Spray Local Colors – Using the airbrush, lay down soft fields of color to establish mood and temperature. In this piece, warm ochre tones formed the base environment, while a cool blue was built gradually over the car body to create contrast and atmosphere.

-
Pencil Detailing – Once the base tones are dry, reintroduce the drawing with colored pencils. Reinforce structure, refine highlights, and add chrome reflections, fabric texture, and other details. The pencil work gives definition and a tactile hand-drawn quality over the smooth sprayed gradients.

-
Spray Fixative – Finish with a clear fixative to lock in the pencil and unify the matte and satin surfaces. This final pass also deepens the tones and gives the artwork a sealed, archival finish.

The result: a nostalgic, road-trip moment—1940s steel and sunlit color blending into one calm summer day. - Dennis Line
